Inspiration for my work comes in many ways, whether it is experimenting with different mediums (oils, pastels, charcoal or watercolor) or trying out new techniques to convey a unique sense of time or place. Stopping and taking in the beauty of the world around us seems silly in this day and age, but to me it feels like the right thing to do. My subjects include old barns, boats, harbors, roads, and the sharp contrasts in values and light that happen suddenly. I find light most dramatic in the early mornings and late afternoons, and often carry a sketchbook to understand and record these fleeting moments. A good sketch, value study, and an interesting perspective are key ingredients for a successful composition.
